Ener-G-Rotors, Inc., a pioneer in economical, distributed, waste heat to power, has successfully commissioned its revolutionary ORCA™ system at Bates Troy Inc., a commercial laundry in Binghamton, NY. The ORCA™ system will generate fuel free, emission free electricity using the excess thermal energy from Bates Troy’s Tecogen Inverde combined heat and power (CHP) system. The project was done in cooperation with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) under a program that promotes adoption of emerging technologies at commercial sites.
Ener-G-Rotors’ ORCA™ system generates electricity from low temperature waste heat between 150°-250°F. Bates Troy uses four 100kW Tecogen Inverde engines to generate electricity and hot water at 195°-215°F for the laundry process. When the thermal energy is not being used for the laundry process, it was being rejected in rooftop coolers. The Ener-G-Rotors ORCA™ system now utilizes this unused thermal energy to produce additional electricity with no additional fuel costs or emissions.
This additional electricity increases the efficiency of the CHP system and lowers the cost of running the rooftop coolers, while producing clean electricity that saves money and lowers Bates Troy’s peak demand. The system is completely automated, and starts and stops depending on the excess thermal energy generated by the CHP system.
“Ener-G-Rotor’s ORCA™ was the perfect complement to our Combined Heat& Power (CHP) system. We need more electricity rather than more thermal energy. This is often the case with CHP users. The ORCA allowed us to produce more electricity while preventing us from wasting the thermal energy that otherwise would have been lost” said Ed Arzouian, Compliance and Special Projects Manager for Bates Troy Inc.
Ener-G-Rotors’ ORCA™ system uses organic Rankine cycle technology to covert low grade waste heat into clean power. The ORCA™ solution is economical, distributed, modular, easy to install, and non-disruptive to theprocess producing the waste heat. The ORCA™ system effectively capture waste heat from stationary engines, CHP systems, and industrial processes, saving customers’ money, increasing energy efficiency, and lowering emissions with paybacks as short as two years.
Ener-G-Rotors, Inc. is a Rotterdam NY based clean energy company commercializing the ORCA™, a revolutionary appliance that economically converts low temperature heat to carbon free electricity for a little as $.03/kWh, the lowest Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) of any generating technology, representing an economic breakthrough in heat to power technologies. Deploying the fuel free and emission free ORCA™ solution, customers can lower energy costs, reduce their carbon footprint, and increase energy efficiency.
